Nurses� Experience of Secondary Traumatic Stress in the COVID-19 Pandemic and The Conditions of Coping with Stress: The Case of a Provincial Center

Aim: This study was conducted to examine the post-traumatic stress symptoms, secondary traumatic stress levels, affecting factors, and ways of nurses coping with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Method: Relationship-seeking and descriptive type of study was conducted with 269 nurses working in a state and a university hospital in Tokat city center. Data were collected with the "Nurse Introductory Information Form", "Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS)", "Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale (PTSSS)" and "Styles of Coping with Stress Scale (PCSS)". The data were tested with mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage, minimum, maximum values, Mann Whitney-U, Kruskal Wallis and regression analysis through SPSS 20 statistical analysis program.
Results: The participants' Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale score was 23.01 (SD=12.89) and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale score was 56.41 (SD=20.65). Listening to a traumatic event and the presence of a method of coping with stress are significant predictors of secondary traumatic stress.
Conclusion: The nurses' Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale subscale and total score averages are low, while the Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale total score average is above the medium level. Educational/psychological support should be provided to prevent or reduce secondary traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress symptoms.

Veriler, SPSS 20 istatistiksel analiz program� arac�l��yla ortalama, standart sapma, frekans, y�zde, minimum, maksimum de�erler, Mann Whitney-U, Kruskal Wallis ve regresyon analizi ile incelenmi�tir.
Bulgular: Hem�irelerin �kincil Travmatik Stres �l�e�i puan� 23,01 (SS=12,89) ve Travma Sonras� Stres Belirtileri �l�e�i puan� 56,41 (SS=20,65) bulunmu�tur. Travmatik bir olay dinleme ve stresle ba� etme y�ntemi varl��, ikincil travmatik stres �zerinde anlaml� yorday�c�lard�r.
Sonu�: Hem�irelerin, �kincil Travmatik Stres �l�e�i alt boyut ve toplam puan ortalamalar� d��k, Travma Sonras� Stres Belirtileri �l�e�i toplam puan ortalamas� orta d�zeyin �zerinde olup ikincil travmatik stresi ve travma sonras� stres belirtilerini �nlemek veya azaltmak amac�yla e�itim ve psikolojik destek sa�lanmas� gerekmektedir.
