Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Level of Nursing Students: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Research

Aim: This research aimed to determine the patient safety competency self-evaluation level of nursing students.
Method: The research was designed as cross-sectional and descriptive and was conducted with 174 students in the third and fourth year of the nursing department of a public university. The research data were collected using the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool (PSCSE) and the Personal Information Form.
Results: The mean PSCSE score of the students was found to be 161.28 (SD=23.47). The mean scores of the sub-dimensions of the PSCSE were 21.80�4.20 for knowledge, 82.39 (SD=13.44) for skill, and 57.09 (SD=9.73) for attitude. It has been determined that there is a moderate, significant, and positive relationship among the sub-dimensions of the scale
Conclusion: It has been determined that the skills, knowledge, and attitude competencies of nursing students regarding patient safety are above the median. In the nursing curriculum, it can be suggested that the course content on patient safety should be designed by considering patient safety competency and self-assessment levels of students. Students who are competent in patient safety and have a high level of self-evaluation will have an impact on increasing the quality of care and patient safety in the health institutions they work after graduation.

Y�ntem: Ara�t�rma, kesitsel ve tan�mlay�c� olarak tasarlanm�� ve bir devlet �niversitesinin hem�irelik b�l�m�n�n ��nc� ve d�rd�nc� s�n�f�ndaki 174 ��renciyle y�r�t�lm��t�r. Ara�t�rma verileri �Hasta G�venli�i Yetkinli�i �z De�erlendirme Arac� (HGY�DA)� ve �Ki�isel Bilgi Formu� kullan�larak toplanm��t�r.
Bulgular: ��rencilerin HGY�DA puan ortalamas�n�n 161,28 (SS=23,47) oldu�u ve HGY�DA alt boyut puan ortalamalar�n�n s�ras�yla; bilgi 21,80 (SS=4,20); beceri 82,39 (13,44); tutum 57,09 (9,73) olarak bulunmu�tur. �l�ek alt boyutlar� aras�nda orta d�zeyde, anlaml�, olumlu y�nl� ili�ki oldu�u belirlenmi�tir.
Sonu�: Hem�irelik ��rencilerinin hasta g�venli�i konusunda beceri, bilgi ve tutum yetkinliklerinin ortalaman�n �zerinde oldu�u belirlenmi�tir. Hem�irelik m�fredat�nda, hasta g�venli�i konusundaki ders i�eriklerinin ��rencilerin hasta g�venli�i yetkinlik ve �z-de�erlendirme d�zeyleri dikkate al�narak d�zenlenmesi �nerilebilir. Hasta g�venli�inde yetkin ve �z-de�erlendirme d�zeyi y�ksek ��rencilerin mezun olduktan sonra �al��t�klar� sa�l�k kurulu�lar�nda bak�m kalitesinin ve hasta g�venli�inin artmas�na etkisi olacakt�r.
