Evaluation of Nursing Profession within The Scope of professionalazation in Turkey and The Process of Harmonization to The European Union: A Qualitative Study

INTRODUCTION: Professionalism is a concept that emphasizes occupational values and commitment. Profession professionalism is a significant phenomenon which has roles in establishing the standards of the occupation and providing high quality care. This study was conducted with the purpose of investigating professionalization of the occupation of nursing in Turkey and the European Union (EU) harmonization process.
METHODS: While the study is a qualitative one, purposive sampling was used. Study group of research consisted of total 15 person faculty members from nursing departments of universities in Turkey, nursing services managers of hospitals and EU experts. The data were collected using the semi-structured in-depth interview method.
RESULTS: It was determined that: nursing is not yet seen as an occupation in Turkey based on criteria of professionalism; fundamental problems in professionalization of the occupation are the variety of occupational education levels, differences seen in types of employment, and low levels of occupational autonomy and organization, and EU criteria will have positive effects as a driving force on the development of professionalization in the occupation of nursing.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In conclusion, it was established that the professionalization process of the occupation of nursing is still in progress in Turkey, and EU harmonization standards will be a driving force to accelerate this progress.

Bu �al��ma, T�rkiye�de hem�irelik mesle�inin profesyonelle�mesi ve Avrupa Birli�i (AB)�ne uyum s�recinde hem�irelikte profesyonelle�meyi de�erlendirmek amac�yla yap�lm��t�r.
Y�NTEM ve GERE�LER: Ara�t�rma niteliksel bir �al��ma olup, ama�l� �rnekleme y�ntemi kullan�lm��t�r. Ara�t�rman�n �al��ma grubunu, T�rkiye�deki �niversitelerin hem�irelik b�l�mlerinden ��retim �yeleri, hastanelerin hem�irelik hizmetleri m�d�rleri ve AB konusunda uzman toplam 15 ki�i olu�turmu�tur. Veriler, yar� yap�land�r�lm�� derinlemesine g�r��me y�ntemiyle toplanm��t�r.
BULGULAR: T�rkiye�de hem�ireli�in hen�z profesyonellik �l��tlerine g�re bir meslek olarak kabul edilmedi�i belirlendi, Mesleki e�itim d�zeyindeki �e�itlilik, istihdam tiplerinde g�r�len farkl�l�klar, mesleki otonomi ve �rg�tlenme d�zeylerinin d��kl�� mesle�in profesyonelle�me s�recindeki temel sorunlar� oldu�u ve AB �l��tlerinin, itici bir g�� olarak hem�irelik mesle�indeki profesyonelle�menin geli�mesi ad�na olumlu olaca�� saptand�. Hem�irelikte profesyonelle�meye ili�kin de�erlendirme, �rg�tlenme, e�itim, otonomi alt temalar� alt�nda topland�.
TARTI�MA ve SONU�: Sonu� olarak, T�rkiye�de hem�irelik mesle�inin profesyonellik s�recinin hala devam etti�i ve AB ye uyum standartlar�n�n bu s�reci h�zland�rma ad�na itici g�� olaca�� ortaya konmu�tur.
